It's frustrating when you're at your computer and you can't access the internet, right? It feels like we've done everything we can to make our lives easier — we downloaded antivirus software, created passwords for every account, and gave ourselves a chore schedule. But one thing remains: your wireless connection is awful. If only it were as reliable as it was in elementary school. If you need help setting up your wireless connection properly, then this post is for you! Not only will I tell you how to set up a wireless network, but I'll also teach the basics of networking and give tips about how to improve your connection speed. You'll feel like an expert in no time. What features do you need? Wireless access is the easiest kind of network connection to set up. This is because your laptop or desktop will have a wireless card built in that makes connecting to a wireless network simple. So, if you have a wireless card inside your computer, then you know all you need to get started. If not, then check out our guide on how to set up a wireless router . That guide will help with two things: setting up your router and connecting to it from your computer's operating system. Note that it's possible for one computer on your network to be connected wirelessly while the other computers are plugged in by USB or Ethernet cables. What are the network connection speeds? If you want to improve your connection speed, then there are a few things you can do. First, make sure that your wireless card is up-to-date. You can do this by updating the driver for the device (I'll explain how in a moment). Second, make sure that you're close enough to the router. Though this might sound obvious, but if you're too far away from the router, then your signal strength will be weak and it will be difficult to get an internet connection and transfer files at fast speeds (or not at all). The last thing to check is whether or not your router is old and slow. If it is, then you should consider replacing it. For more information about internet connection speeds and how to measure them, read this guide . How do I get online? Now that we've covered what's involved in setting up a wireless network, we can get into actually getting online. To do this, you'll need to connect your computer to the internet by using a USB or Ethernet cable. First and foremost, make sure that your computer is plugged in and turned on: you don't want to count on the wireless card doing its job if your computer isn't running! And then install any software updates for your operating system that might be needed: sometimes there are security patches that take longer than they should to install. Then, once you're connected to the internet, install any software updates for your wireless card (I'll explain how in a moment). The last step is to connect your computer to the wireless network that you set up. This can be done in several ways. Here are three methods: 1) If your computer has a network adapter (like an Ethernet cable), then plug it into one of the available ports on your router or modem. Then plug the other end of the cable into one of the available ports on your laptop or desktop. Once this is done, you should be able to access your internet connection through your computer's operating system. 2) First install software updates for your operating system and wireless card. cfa1e77820
