Facegen Modeller is a software that allows the user to create photorealistic 3D models of human faces. It is often used in computer animation, video games or motion capture. FaceGen contains all of the major facial expression types and uses a proprietary system developed by its creators at Carnegie Mellon University called FACETS which stands for Facial Animation Control Technology. External software can be integrated with FaceGen to perform more complex tasks such as rigging or lip-sync retargeting. FaceGen is one of the most recent development in 3D face sculpting software, currently on version 3.5 released April 2012, with an estimated creation time per model being between 10 minutes and 8 hours depending on skill level and complexity of shape. FaceGen is used both in the creation of animated 3D human faces and in one-time simulations of human faces for research on robotic facial performance, with an estimated creation time per model being between 10 minutes and 8 hours depending on skill level. FaceGen is available in three versions: FaceGen Studio, FaceGen Studio Lite, and the full version FaceGen Pro. The differences between them are described below.A free basic version of Facegen is available for download, which has most functions of the software but does not include the NURBS-based modelling capability. It also lacks the ability to create or edit animation sequences or lip sync animations. Those who would like to use the software without purchasing the full version can download a serial number generator to create their own. FaceGen was developed by David Luebke and S. Shyam Sundar and was originally created at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA in 1990, and later distributed by Carnegie Mellon University - Software Engineering Institute from 1993 onwards. In 2004 it was purchased from Carnegie Mellon University by Daz3D Limited of Italy who made minor updates prior to releasing version 3.3 in 2004. In 2008 version 3. 5 was released and its beta and final versions were distributed by Daz3D Limited and Daz3D USA. Developers of FaceGen include:Notable users include: "Facegan is currently used for the creation of realistic 3D models of human faces among other tasks such as retargeting facial animation (e.g., lip-sync processing) to lip movements in order to create realistic animated characters" - John Dehne, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Computer Science Department, University of Arizona, Tucson. "Used extensively by computer animators and motion capture specialists in their work ... it's a tremendous program." - David Luebke, Ph.D. http://www.facegen.com/ - Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/business/s_290421.html FaceGen is used in the creation of realistic human faces for both animated films and video games such as: Recent projects such as these (including The Big Bang Theory and NCIS) demonstrate that FaceGen retains its industry leading position in the modelling and animation industry." - Mark Christiansen , Executive Vice President, Marketing and Sales Daz 3D Limited. cfa1e77820
